Swift’s View Apartment

       Sorano, Tuscany, Italy

The location of Sorano is ideal. Equidistant from Rome and Florence. 45 minutes from Orvieto to the East, and 45 minutes from Orbetello and the beautiful Costa d'Argento of the Mediterranean to the West. 75 minutes to Siena. 25 Minutes to the lovely Lake Bolsena. Sorano is a beautifully preserved medieval hill town in the Alta Maremma area of Tuscany, characterized by unspoiled rolling landscapes and fascinating Etruscan sites. Described by a guest as a "nid douillet"- a cosy nest-, the "Swift's View" apartment is located in the historic center of the town, and affords wonderful views down to the valley of the Lente river over terra cotta roof tops. The name of the apartment is inspired by the ethereal birds that nest in the volcanic tufa stone walls of the town. Wifi is available and parking is a short walk away. The apartment is on 2 levels. The main floor is the living area and kitchen, with a large 14th century fireplace and a pull out couch that could sleep an additional 2 people. The lower floor, accessed by three steps, contains the bedroom and bathroom. The owner/host lives in the adjacent 3 bedroom house, which is also available to rent by special request. Both places were renovated as period homes with great attention to detail by the owner, and are furnished with lovely antiques. The cul-de-sac, where the apartment is located, can be used to eat al fresco- and the opposite cantina is usually open for an fine glass of homemade wine. Another apartment, the Casa Bianca, is now also available for renting.

Reviews

Where to start? The old town of Sorano itself is a joy, the essence of Tuscany distilled in stone and light. The accommodation is modest but truly authentic and if this place fails to touch your soul, then my surprise would be boundless.
Chris lives in the adjoining property and is a delight in every way, a true gentleman and invaluable guide to the area itself, especially the heavenly food and wine of the region. Off the beaten tourist track, but worth every mile and minute spent getting here. My daughter and I visited in September, by motorcycle (safe parking in the town square, a short walk from the accommodation) but at any time, a visit to this house will be a truly rewarding experience. I cannot recommend this listing highly enough, come here and fall in love with a wonderful place, I promise you that leaving will be difficult.

We had a marvelous experience in Chris' little nest in Sorano, we literally fell in love with the place and we finally decided to extend our stay for 2 days more. Sorano has a very special atmosphere and we fully experienced the place (stifling sun but also thunders and mist coming out from the forest around, we felt like in a zen garden !). But above all, Chris is an incredible host, he was waiting for us with homemade - and addictive - peach jam and vino de la casa which is not less addictive, we must admit ! He gave us very good tips and spots to go (fine restaurants and cantina we loved), places to visit, things to avoid etc... He also has an amazing garden in front of the house which is really enchanting and full of stories ! Thank you so much Chris for all you did, it was a perfect stay and I will definitely recommend your charming house !!

We can't say enough how much we enjoyed our stay in Sorano at Chris' place... Sorano is a breathtaking town set into a hill-side, with winding streets, cobble-stone paths & amazing views everywhere you turn. Chris' place is just gorgeous - it has everything you need including great cooking facilities if you want to make dinner, coffee etc. It was really clean & had phenomenal views - waking up in the house is like being in a movie set in a medieval village! We also can't say enough about Chris & his willingness to share information about Sorano, places to see in the surrounding area, great wine bars & local cafés to try, & also a beautiful tour of his veggie garden perched up on the hillside. We had such a great 3 days & really wish we had stayed much longer (especially now we are at our next place which is nothing on Chris' place in Sorano!)
                                                                                                                                                                        Brenton, Adelaide, Australia
We had great time in Sorano - this is a unique and lovely small town, very quiet and peaceful allowing for great relaxation after a day of sightseeing. Chris is a great host - offering good hints and recommendations what to see, where to have good dinner, where to buy local specialties. The apartment is nice and cozy, offering everything you need with great view and nice two cats on top of it :)

                                                                                                                                                                               Alina, Wroclaw, Poland

Chris is an exceptional host. Not only did he help us to get settled in, make us feel at home and show us the amenities, he also went beyond the duties of a host and showed us the town and surrounding area. The result was an amazing experience, that helped to make one feel connected to this amazing place in a way that one cannot by oneself. The accommodation is quaint, special and exceeded our expectations. The breathtaking views of the gorge seem more spectacular against the backdrop of this intimate, quite and cozy cottage. Chris also helped us plan our day trips and was always available. Having lived there for 25 years, his knowledge of the people and the environment greatly enhanced the experience, making it unique. We highly recommend coming to this special place and experiencing it for yourself.

It is hard to find the right words to describe Chris' place in Sorano. Staying there felt like going back in time. His small apartment lies in the middle of the old town on the hillside, surrounded by the sound of silence and the smell of flowers. Chris provided us with fruit from his garden, bread and home made wine and jam. He also provided us with tons of great advices on what to do during our stay, and also the basics on how to make wine. This is truly a home away from home and we highly recommend a stay at Chris' place.

                                                                                                                                                                     Philip and Stine, Bergen, Norway

I can only rave about my experience in Sorano. Chris' place is the perfect getaway if you are looking for a place off the beaten track.
Chris was great, really helpful in telling us where to go-we didn't even need a guidebook. And he's got two cute cats:-) Definitely recommended!

                                                                                                                                                                               Verena, Vienna, Austria

Chris was incredible, went way out of his way to make sure my stay was as best as it could be and Sorano is breathtaking. You're immediately taken back in time as soon as you set foot in the town and Chris' place is an extension of that. It's perfect. Highly recommend it.

                                                                                                                                                                             Chad, Vancouver, Canada

Oh boy! Sorano is an undiscovered joy. We are half-tempted to lie and pretend that Chris and his wonderful apartment were awful just so we can keep it to ourselves! Chris is a gentleman and the perfect host. The apartment is gorgeous, homely and has breathtaking views of the valley and surrounding countryside. Sorano is idyllic -- a quiet, not-too-touristy haven. Chris gave us great recommendations for things to do and places to eat.

Direi che è stata un'ottima esperienza, posto bellissimo assolutamente da vedere come anche tutti i luoghi là intorno. Ottima l'ospitalità.

                                                                                                                                                                                 Merle, Marche, Italy

I can't tell you how grateful we are to have found this sweet spot in Tuscany. It wasn't our honeymoon, but close. My husband and I wanted to replicate our honeymoon for our 25th Anniversary and Swift's View Apartment was perfect. We could have gone high end, but this lovely homey apartment was way more gratifying and closer to the original. We felt (and acted!) like 25-year-olds again!) Chris, who lives next door, brought us his homemade fig and ginger jam with a fresh loaf of Italian bread on our first morning. In the evening we shared a bottle of his home bottled red wine and a pot of wild mushroom risotto. BTW, prettiest town in Tuscany! Thank you, Chris! You rekindled the magic! Come stay with us in NYC any time!

Not only is this an incredible, special, charming and beautiful place to sleep, explore and relax but Chris is a perfect host. The house you will stay in is clean, cozy and will quickly become your home--regardless of how long you stay. I didn't know that such beautiful villages exist...maybe just in the movies. Listen to his suggestions, enjoy the quiet and magical village and eat lots of yummy food!!!! If you have a car I also highly suggest visiting his friend in Sovana, stopping in Pitigliano and Saturnia...beautiful and natural hot springs about 40 minutes away. He'll tell you everything you need to know. Thank you so much Chris!!!

                                                                                                                                                                                 Talia, Tel Aviv, Israel

My husband and I really enjoyed our stay in Sorano, a tiny medieval fortress town in Tuscany. Chris is a great host, who has meticulously restored this apartment. We really felt like we had gone back in time, and were experiencing life as it was centuries ago, with some modern updates (bathroom and kitchen). The winding streets and the amazing views are quite an unforgettable experience. Chris is a very relaxed and easy-going man, with a remarkable life story. An American by birth, he has been living in Sorano for many years. He has experience as a photo-journalist, author, and fine-artist, just to mention a few of his accomplishments. He's a lot of fun to talk to, and we shared coffee at a local spot one morning, and we tasted his wine on another occasion. Top notch! If you're looking for a place to get away from it all, and experience something different, this is it. The nearby town of Pitigliano is quite well known as another medieval hilltop town, but we actually preferred Sorano, with it's more organic street layout. Chris introduced us to Niccolo, owner of Cantina L'Ottava Rima. This was where we had the best food of our entire stay in Italy. It was authentic regional food, prepared with heart by Niccolo. Thanks again Chris!

Fantastic flat in a stunning setting. Beautifully renovated and just right for a couple. Chris was a brilliant host.

This place really was enchanting. We came to Sorano almost by accident, and with no expectations, but we have already earmarked it as a location we will re-visit in the future. It's a great hub to see the rest of the region. The roads to and from the town are beautiful winding paths that are great fun to drive. Chris was very generous by providing us with fresh fruit, bread, jam, coffee, milk and most importantly his very own homemade wine (that was delish). His local tips provided us with an excellent itinerary for our stay. These were places we could never have found on our own.
Thanks again Chris!

Chris was our best host to date with AirBnB. We have stayed in 5 and Chris was by far the most willing to help and give of his time/knowledge and so much more. He left a gift of wine, jam, break, milk butter for Breakfast, but what he really gave was his time to talk about the town he loves and the country area of Tuscany. He has a delightful apartment, which is rustic and was like we were stepping back in time and living like the locals did 100 of years ago (with some modern amenities). It is a simple apartment but if you want a different experience, and a visit with a great host - BOOK

                                                                                          David, Auckland, New Zealand

                                                                                                                                                                             Chrystelle, Lyon, France

Wow! Chris was a great introduction to the airbnb experience for our honeymoon. Chris gave us great directions for us driving in from our flight to Rome. He went the extra mile for us providing us with bread, milk, fruit and wine when we arrived. Each day he provided us with great excursion options of the town and nearby Tuscan and Umbrian towns and areas. We absolutely loved our Tuscan experience and owe it all to Chris. If you want to experience Tuscan life with some modern touches, Chris' place is the absolute perfect place to stay. Thank you again Chris!

                                                                                                                                                                         Charlotte, Ontario, Canada

We really enjoyed our time at this lovely apartment. During our 6 day stay Chris has been a fantastic host, he was very helpful, giving advice on places worth to visit, his homemade marmalade and his red wine made us feel very welcome.

                                                                                                                                                                           Baris, Berlin, Germany

Chris home and stories are fabulous. I would recommend everybody to enjoy Sorano and the surroundings in the atmosphere of his house and with his advices. We really enjoyed him and the place. There is a lot to learn there!

                                                                                                                                                                            Elena, Florence, Italy

This place was amazing. Start to finish Chris was fantastic. Our original place was in a close by town called Pitigliano and when it flooded we had to find a new place to stay at 10pm at night. Chris responded quickly and made everything very easy for us. The apartment is charming! Perfect for a romantic get away. The kitchen is beautifully refurbished in an amazing rustic way. The town is beautiful and not overly crowded with tourists like so many in the area. The little grocery stores have a great selection of meats, cheeses and local produce. Perfectly charming all around. Its exactly what Europe should be like. We were sad to leave and wouldn't hesitate to go back if we had the chance!

                                                                                                                                                                             Eleanor, Seattle, USA

We had a great stay at Chris apartment, wonderful furnished and with a beautiful view into the valley. Everything we needed for cooking and daily living we could find in Sorano. We spend great 6 days in Sorano and we are sure we are coming back.

                                                                                                                                                                        Claudia, Hamburg, Germany

My two friends and I had a wonderful stay at Chris's apartment in Sorano. What a beautiful town! Chris was very helpful in providing recommendations and directions for the area. He went out of his way to show us the town, tell us about its history, and introduce us to his friends. It's a very interesting place with several great restaurants nearby, and it's a perfect location from which to explore Pitigliano, Sovana, and other parts of the Maremma. Chris also shared plenty of his homemade wine with us throughout our stay! It was absolutely wonderful. Thanks, Chris!

Me and my boyfriend stayed for a few days at Chris house and we are very happy to have chosen to stay there because we really enjoyed it. Sorano is an enchanting village and Chris house is the perfect place to be, it is like to be back in medieval times but with todays comfort. Chris is very nice, a great host and we really enjoyed his company. We hope to go back soon and stay longer. We recommend it to everybody.

I stayed at Chris's with my friends and we just loved it. The apartment is charming and you have everything you need for a pleasant stay. Chris was very helpful and friendly and we enjoyed his company a lot. Sorano itself is a magical place, and Chris's apartment is perfect if you want to experience that 'magic'. We regret we couldn't stay there longer, but we really hope to come back sometime, as it was one of the nicest places we've ever stayed at. Strongly recommended!
P.s . don't miss Chris's wine when you're there - it's sooo good!

We had an absolutely magical stay with Chris in Sorano. The apartment was wildly beyond our expectations, a rustic home nestled away in the old stone streets of the town with remarkable views, with all of the necessary amenities for a comfortable, modern stay. Chris himself is a fascinating individual who has been living in Sorano for over twenty years, and has an intimate knowledge and respect for his adopted home (ask to see some of his writings about Sorano). He is a natural host and we spent a lovely evening of conversation with him which was as important a part of our visit as anything else we saw in the town. We had a difficult time choosing a place in Tuscany to stay, but are so lucky to have landed where we did - although Chris, in his humility, said anywhere in Sorano would have been the right choice. I sincerely hope we have a chance to meet and stay with Chris again, and would recommend his place as the best we have seen and used through AirBNB to date.

I can only rave about my experience in Sorano. Chris' place is the perfect getaway if you are looking for a place off the beaten track.

Chris was great, really helpful in telling us where to go-we didn't even need a guidebook. And he's got two cute cats:-) Definitely recommended!

Chris was incredible, went way out of his way to make sure my stay was as best as it could be and Sorano is breathtaking. You're immediately taken back in time as soon as you set foot in the town and Chris' place is an extension of that. It's perfect. Highly recommend it.

We really enjoyed our time at this lovely apartment. During our 6 day stay Chris has been a fantastic host, he was very helpful, giving advice on places worth to visit, his homemade marmalade and his red wine made us feel very welcome.

We had a great stay at Chris apartment, wonderful furnished and with a beautiful view into the valley. Everything we needed for cooking and daily living we could find in Sorano.   We spend great 6 days in Sorano and we are sure we are coming back.
